People who drink a lot of coffee live longer

Dr. Frank Hu has just completed a 20-year study on the effects of coffee on the human body. It turns out that coffee lovers live longer. In particular, the study showed that coffee drinks reduce the risk of cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases, as well as the likelihood of suicide.
The study began in 1976 and covered about 210,000 people. With all subsequent observations over the years, the study included 4.7 million person-years of data. The scale of the experiment meant that several generations of scientists were required to complete the study. Hu, a research associate and professor at Harvard Medical School, joined him in 1996.

“Coffee is definitely a very complex drink,” said Hu Jintao. - In addition to caffeine, it contains hundreds, perhaps thousands of biologically active compounds. Therefore, it is very difficult, even impossible, to ascertain the effect of individual components or chemicals. ”

The health benefits of coffee are built not so much on several components, as on the synergistic effects of the constituents of coffee, its minerals and antioxidants. At the same time, both ordinary and decaffeinated coffee equally beneficially affect the body for blood diseases and diabetes.

Hu noticed that the study of coffee is complicated by the fact that many of his fans smoke.

"We found that the health benefits of coffee are more pronounced and obvious in people who do not smoke," said Hu. “In other words, smoking effectively eliminates the potential health benefits of drinking coffee.”

In addition to Hu's new study - which had a total of ten co-authors - previous studies show that regular coffee consumption is associated with a reduced risk of developing diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, Parkinson's disease, and liver ailments, including liver cancer. Coffee also helps reduce depression and the likelihood of suicide, helps the body metabolize sugar in the blood, improves insulin sensitivity and reduces inflammation.

Hu warns that the reaction to coffee is individual, however, as the study showed, drinking coffee offers a lot of health benefits.
