Myths that you probably believe in thanks to the movie

Before the advent of the Internet, people learned about many things from books and films. However, not everything that we see on the big screen is true. Here are a few myths from the movies and TV shows that you might still believe.mif-film-6.jpg

1. Chloroform will not put a person to sleep for several hours.

mif-film-1.jpg

Stories of criminals who neutralize their victims with chloroform have existed since the time when this substance was used as an anesthetic.

However, in realityIt has not been proven that this method can disable someoneat least without the use of another substance, such as alcohol. And this does not work as shown in the films.

A person needs to inhale chloroform for at least5 minutes before he faints. After that, it is necessary that chloroform is constantly delivered to the victim, so that it remains under the influence. If you do not support the chin, then this may result in the victim’s tongue blocking the airway and suffocating.

So the idea that you put a handkerchief with chloroform on someone's mouth, throw it in the trunk and wait until it wakes up after a few hours, it will not work.

2. Police can immediately trace the call.

mif-film-2.jpg

In the films, every time when the police have to track down the call, they need to force a person to talk for a long time.

But this is not true from the 70s, when mobile operators stopped resorting to operators and switches and beganuse electronic switching devices. The same technology that allows the caller ID to identify the call also allows the police to find out where the call is coming from.

Mobile phones work a little differently, as they are not tied to a specific place. But even in this case, the police mayimmediately track down the phonein which GPS is activated.

But even without GPS, the police can use cell phone towers to resort to the triangulation method. And although in the films and serials they show that this process takes place almost instantly, it can take up to half an hour, although the connection can last only a second before this process begins.

3Torture does not affect people
mif-film-3.jpg

Often in films it is clear that physical torture is the best way to get information. This method is not only unethical, but, as shown by numerous studies,no results.

Imagine that you are tortured for information that you do not know about, or that which your tormentors do not believe. What would you do? Most of us will tell what the interrogator wants to hear in order to stop the torture.

“Bad guys” think also because information extracted through torture is oftendeceptive, which further slows down the investigation.

So if torture doesn't work, what can work? The conversation is human and adequate attitude, according to experts. But this does not sound so exciting, and therefore torture will be constantly shown in films.

4. You should never inject medicine directly into the heart.
mif-film-4.jpg

In "Pulp Fiction" and "The Rock", the hero of the film survives due to the fact that he was given the medicine right in the heart. Although intracardiac injections exist, they are practically not resorted to, because there are many ways to introduce a medicine without a deadly risk.

The introduction of medication into a person’s bloodstream through a vein is a rather effective method of its distribution, since blood circulates throughout the body in less than a minute.

The introduction of the drug directly into the heart, can deliver the drug instantly, but leave a hole in the heart. This may lead tofatal bleedingand also increases the risk of perforation of the lung, which can also be fatal.

Although injection through a vein does not look as impressive as a blow to the sternum, it is much safer.

5. Forensic science does not reveal the crime in a magical way.
mif-film-5.jpg

If you've ever watched detective series, you are probably familiar with forensics and its important role in the criminal justice system. And while forensics helps gather evidence, she’sdoes not disclose the crime.

So, in the films, you can see how investigators find a hair, a blood stain, a used cup or chewing gum at a crime scene, and often this evidence is enough to solve a crime. But there are a number of problems, such as the presence of a variety of DNA that are not related to criminals, but simply passing by passersby.

Even if the DNA exactly belongs to a specific person, you needfind a suspect. The databases contain DNA of convicted offenders only, and in most cases it does not coincide with those already in the system.

In other words, the present investigation depends more on the running of the police than on the criminalists.

6. Defibrillators do not trigger a stalled heart.
mif-film-6.jpg

Often in films you can see a dramatic moment when someone's heart stops, and nurses or doctors grab the defibrillator electrodes, rub them together and use them to instantly bring the patient back to life.

In real life, if no heartbeat is observed, an electric shock applicable to a person’s chest, will not start the heart again.

Defibrillators benefit, but not when a person is already dead. The device operateswhen a person can have a cardiac arrest and the heart beats inconsistently. In this case, the line on the cardiac monitor will not be straight, but jumping, as if the heart had a "fit." In this situation, the defibrillator plays an important role, as it restarts the system and removes it from this state.

7. You do not need to wait to file an application for a missing person.
mif-film-7.jpg

In films, missing people are almost always told to wait 24 to 72 hours to file an application with the police. But actuallyapplicants can report a loss when they decide.

It is believed thatthe first day after abduction are the most important, and after that the probability of finding someone is significantly reduced.

Of course, if an adult has disappeared, and there is no reason to suspect that he is in danger, the police may be able to help. Many people disappear for a short time and often deliberately.

8. Referring to the state of insanity is not the best way to avoid criminal charges.
mif-film-8.jpg

If you are watching TV shows or movies, you may have wondered why they are arresting serial killers and other dangerous criminals, if almost all of them are considered irresponsible. However, in real life, the recognition of insanity does not always work.

If the suspect is found not guilty because of insanity, this does not mean that he is free. In most countries heenters the institution for the mentally illwhere will receive treatment to achieve mental stability.

According to studies, many of those who were found innocent due to insanity, stay in mental institutions twice as longthan if they were sent to prison, if they were found guilty.

9. A silenced pistol is actually not that quiet.
mif-film-9.jpg

Weapon owners and vendors call such devices “noise suppressors,” and this explains what silencers actually do.

They do not drown out the sound of a pistol, since it is almost impossible to drown out the sound of a shooting weapon. A silencer can reduce various decibels mainly toprotect ear arrowand not disguise his whereabouts.

And in real life, it doesn’t look so completely silent, as shown in films about secret agents.

10. Drowning is a dull and silent process.
mif-film-10.jpg

You have seen this in many films: a person in the water begins to sink, waving his arms in the air to get to the surface, as if calling for help. Unfortunately, in reality drowning is a real danger becauseit is very difficult to notice.

The drowning man does not have enough air, and hecan't scream for help. He also instinctively uses his hands to push himself and his mouth at the surface to be able to breathe.

Those who scream and spin, in fact, experience water stress and do not sink.Unlike drowning, who instinctively make involuntary movements, those who are experiencing water stress can save themselves if they are given a lifesaving tool. And although water stress can turn into drowning, many people drown without going through the stress phase.
