Ecological myths of our reality

Since childhood we are sure that our environment is bad, the planet is experiencing an environmental crisis, and to help it, we need to use paper bags instead of plastic ones, and also to save forests, because these are light planets.
We found out that all these statements are myths, and figured out where else they lied to us in biology and geography lessons.

1.

1. Myth number 1:
Ecological myths of our reality
Today, the environment is in very bad condition. In the second half of the 20th century, ecology began to be called everything related to the protection of the environment from humans, therefore, soon the word became synonymous with the state of the environment.
Truth: Ecology cannot be bad or polluted; it is only a science about the interaction of organisms with the environment.

2.

2. Myth number 2: Forests - lungs of the planet
Ecological myths of our reality
Forests provide oxygen as much as they consume. But the task of cleaning the air and protecting the soil from erosion, they cope like no other.
Oxygen is produced in large quantities by bacteria and unicellular organisms that inhabit the seas and oceans, which can be called the lungs of the planet.
Truth: Forests in their functions are more reminiscent of the work of the liver and kidneys.

3.

Myth number 3: Natural ecosystems are wasteless.
Ecological myths of our reality
It is possible to speak of living nature as self-regulating, but not everything is utilized in it. At full utilization, no soils would form. Coal, oil, shale, marble - all this is “waste” of past biospheres, a kind of landfill, which nature has arranged.
Truth: Ecosystems are not wasteless, but their “garbage” is buried in such a way that it does not adversely affect nature at future stages of its development. Unless, of course, man interferes.

4.

Myth number 4: The cause of environmental crises is always human.
Ecological myths of our reality
For example, the destruction of the protective ozone layer and global warming causes, among other things, volcanic activity, as well as a lack of ultraviolet radiation during the cold season.
Truth: Sometimes the environment itself causes its own troubles. But, unfortunately, the pernicious influence of a person on her condition is much stronger.

5.

Myth number 5: Paper and bioplastics are more environmentally friendly than plastic.
Ecological myths of our reality
Everyone thinks that a paper bag is more environmentally friendly because it decomposes faster than plastic. But no one thinks about how cardboard and paper production affects nature: it pollutes water bodies and causes deforestation.
Bioplastic, with packaging from which some food giants are boiling now, is a plastic of plant origin, which does decompose relatively quickly. But this decomposition takes place in special conditions, and not at landfills, where most of the biodegradable packages are sent.
Truth: Both packaging options harm the environment. Therefore, whatever package and type of plastic you choose in your daily activities, reuse it and then recycle it.

6.

Myth number 6: The ecological crisis on Earth happened for the first time.
Ecological myths of our reality
The first environmental crisis occurred about 50 thousand years ago, when the depletion of land resources by the first people occurred. Then, in order to overcome the lack of food, people thought up to burn the soil in order to update the ecosystem. But crises with breaks of several thousand years arose again, experiencing that, mankind invented agriculture and animal husbandry, made an industrial revolution.
Truth: Throughout the entire existence of mankind, environmental crises have occurred. But mastering the technology to overcome them, a person only causes new, increasingly large-scale environmental disasters.
