During the trial in Birmingham, 53-year-old Simon Bramhall pleaded guilty to two incidents of violence on February 9 and August 21, 2013. Bramhall worked for 12 years at Queen Elizabeth II Hospital and was in good standing as a specialist in transplantology.

The surgeon used an argon plasma coagulator, which is usually used to burn blood vessels to leave his initials on the internal organs of patients. This is not harmful, and the marks left should have disappeared over time. But during the re-operation of the presence of one of the "autographs" learned colleague surgeon.

After the incident became known in the hospital, Bramhall was suspended from work, and in the spring of 2014 the doctor himself submitted a resignation letter.

“The disciplinary meeting was held on May 15, but I was not fired. On May 16, I myself decided to resign.I need to move on, ”said Bramhall.

On December 13, 2017 in the Birmingham Royal Court a hearing was held on the process of the former surgeon. Prosecutor Tony Badenoh stated that this is a very unusual case, which has no analogues in judicial practice.

“It was a deliberate use of force against the patient during the operation. The surgeon’s actions were deliberate, ”the prosecutor said.

Elizabeth Reid of the Crown Prosecution Service reported that Bramhall’s actions were an abuse of patient confidence.

One of the surgeon's former patients, Tracy Scriven, stood up for his defense.

“Even if he left his initials on the liver, why is it so bad? I would not care if he did this to me. This man saved my life. ”

The sentence in the case of Bramhall will be imposed on January 12, 2018.
