Honorable women were not invited to such feasts, because for the ladies it was considered extremely indecent to participate in feasts. With the exception of heaters, designed to entertain the public. They, on the contrary, were invited on purpose.
Invited guests, who were called symposiasts, prepared very thoroughly for symposia, postponing all other matters, thoroughly washed, rubbed with incense, put on special festive clothing — usually it was a chiton — and wreaths of leaves of grapes, ivy, myrtle. And they tried not to be late - it was considered a bad form among the Greeks, and they never waited for those who were late - they started without them.
When they arrived at the house, the guests took off their shoes, the slaves washed their feet, and at the direction of the owners, the guests occupied the places reserved for them. They settled on special dining boxes - apoklintrah, richly decorated and covered with fluffy fabric with exquisite patterns. These lodges were set up so that during the meal you could calmly recline on them, leaning on your left hand, and at the same time almost did not have to move.
At the appointed time, small tables appeared with snacks and wine. For convenience, the tables were lower lounges. Slaves and servants carried the guests in a special vessel to wash their hands, and then a feast began.
