Ukrainian Daria Afonina lives in Holland for several years. On her Facebook page, she shares her impressions of the Dutch way of life.
This time she told about the things that fundamentally distinguish the Dutch education system from the Ukrainian one. And how do these things as a result affect the difference in our lifestyle?
Yes, Ukrainians ask me about the Dutch school, and the Dutch about the Ukrainian. Of course, they are interested in differences. The first ones are sure that “there, they are probably better, but not quite clear? than". And the second - that we train the children and deprive them of their childhood.
I will try to explain the difference that I feel in simple life examples. I'll tell you what the local school actually teaches and how it achieves its goals.
I want to make a reservation right away that everything said is only the result of subjective observations, without any claims to ultimate truth.
The most important difference for me is that our traditional Ukrainian school is undoubtedly very concerned about the richness of the program, the quality and quantity of the knowledge that needs to be pushed into the heads of our children. All this is called, if I am not mistaken, by the general word “Intellect of the country”.
Children get used to being race participants, to achieve results, ratings. Rush for victory for the sake of victory. Laggards, blind and lame - ignore. Do you hate school? Be patient.
Often, not only the children themselves, but also parents find it difficult to grasp the relationship between what the school gives children and how it can practically be used in adulthood.
In general, it really gives a good basis for the development of the child's intelligence - versatile knowledge enriches the inner world and all that. Yes, our more creative and clever - do not take that away.
But there is one “but”, as for me: our school stamps ambitious young people who later break off just grown wings on the brutal granite reality of our being.
Our children, stuffed with arguments about the lyrical hero Shevchenko, theorems, commas and dashes (in the right places),as if they fall into an unknown looking-glass right from the schoolyard - into adulthood, and there ... There are completely different rules, a completely different song.
And all because social adaptation and the ability to live according to civilized rules in school is somehow not particularly inculcated.
Knowing our own and others' rights and areas of responsibility, the ability to love and develop ourselves, peacefully find a common language and respect completely different people, learn to learn and enjoy it - this is not as important as the five in mathematics, right?
How do you grow up a person and based on what values will you build your life? This should, by default, somehow form itself during the reading of fiction (because it brings up the personality and forms the consciousness). The behavior in our diaries was the last column, but in vain ... Although we still probably do not fully understand why this is so important.
How are they?
Example 1We put a container in our school and offer children to collect caps from milk, bottles and other containers, which are usually closed with plastic twists. As a rule, such trifles go to a garbage can labeled “plastic”.
And here is the situation: in the country there are blind people. Often they move with the help of chopsticks, accompanied by guide dogs, which they wear on their backs a special plastic mount, which holds the blind. Children, you know that there are blind people. Let's collect the caps, these dog sleds will be made of them, so they can train more guide dogs.
Yes, let such people be 2% of the total population of the country, but they are and we should not forget about them.
Conclusion: the society is multifaceted, learn to respect and help even those with whom you, perhaps, will never bring fate.
Example 2In no way can you fight at school. Our scheme "do not hit yourself, but if they climb to you ... - then wipe out how to surrender!" Does not work. Even if offended, you can not fight anyway. Otherwise, you grow up a gangster and go to jail, yes. “What to do?” - ours are lost.
First, you calmly ask the offender: “niet doen” (do not do it!), And if this does not work, go to complain to a higher authority.
Such a model of behavior is formed in which the child, and later an adult, does not clarify the conflicts “on the arrow behind the garages”, but attracts competent and responsible authorities for solving such issues.
At school, it's a teacher; for an adult, it's the police.
Conclusion: the identity of another person is under no circumstances untouchable, those who are supposed to do this will assess his actions. Learn to establish communication!
What about knowledge?
Example 3. The school has a corner with books where a child can come in during free school time and read a book he likes. All parents are persistently asked to register with children in the library, read children's books at home and read adult literature in front of children so that they can see that this is good and everyone is doing it.
Here I will be as brief as possible: the purpose of such accustoming to the book is not to have the child swallow "the list of mandatory literature for the summer." He should love the process of reading, communication with the book should become a natural and favorite part of his life. This is fraught with the general goal of the school: not to push the child into the head abstract facts, but to teach them to enjoy the process of learning, making it part of their adult life.
What grows out of it?
Banal conversation on the Dutch course: who was busy at the weekend.
One Moroccan told me that she was dealing with clogging in the sink.A plumber told her that in vain she poured sunflower oil there after frying. “Where do you need it?” Asks. “In a separate container, of course,” he resents, “you collect everything, and then you take it to the processing center. It’s impossible to clog the general system! ”
Yes, you take it like this and solemnly carry it in a bank, like tests at a clinic, for far away quarters is the most overcooked butter. Together with the remnants of meatballs and pancakes. And in the toilet - in any case! In general, nowhere, except the place where it should be. And all bear.
The whole group almost burned out of shame under the fiery gaze of the native Dutchwoman, who learned that we were not yet at that stage of evolution - we’ve been pouring everything. Not so with the ecology and pipes.
Conclusion: it is impossible to spoil anywhere, even if nobody sees. From this all will be bad.
... To be a multifaceted, free person and a worthy member of society, respecting its rules - these things do not exclude each other. The school models a real society and raises a small citizen. You can choose any path of your development, but at the same time you should clearly recognize the personal responsibility for your choice - I think that is the message that is heard at the local school. What we want.
